Agriculture grant information session planned for Thursday
The Hawaii Department of Agriculture is inviting the public to an agriculture grant information session and market development workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Kona Cooperative Extension Service, 79-7381 Mamalahoa Highway in Kainaliu.
Attendees will discuss different funding sources, proposal preparation and reporting and grant requirements. There is no cost to attend but registration is required the day before the event.

Imiloa offers cultural programs
Musical performances, presentations and talks are planned April 23 through 25 at Imiloa Astronomy Center.
A panel of celebrated Hawaiian poets, orators and song writers will discuss the art of composing in Hawaiian language and provide insight into the practice of documenting history through poetry, song and performance at 10 a.m. Wednesday. A musical performance by Manu Boyd will follow at 1 p.m.
Oiwi TV will present their new film, “Na Loea: The Masters” at 10 a.m. Thursday. The film promotes Hawaii through engaging stories of a select group of masters. Hoku Zuttermeister will perform at 1 p.m.
A presentation by Taupouri Tangaro and Kekuhi Kealiikanakaoleohaililani will focus on the sacredness of the waonahele, or upland forest, and its importance to hula at 10 a.m. Friday. A musical performance by Kuana Torres Kahele will follow at 1 p.m.

UH Center director speaking to Rotary
Marty Fletcher, newly appointed University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii director, soon to be known as Hawaii Community College—Palamanui, will speak to the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise Wednesday.
Fletcher’s talk will address how to create a college-going culture.
Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise holds weekly breakfast meetings at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday upstairs at Humpy’s Restaurant in Coconut Grove Marketplace. Breakfast is $11, coffee is $5.

Codependent women meeting Thursday
A Co-Dependents Anonymous women’s meeting meets from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place.
The 12-step fellowship is comprised of those whose common purpose is recovery from codependence and the development and maintenance of healthy relationships. The nonprofit organization is supported by the voluntary contributions of attending members.

Kona Historical Society holds membership meeting
Kona Historical Society’s 5 p.m. Thursday membership meeting will include a discussion on Kona’s Scenic Byways by Tomoe Nimori, vice president of Pulama Ia Kona Heritage Preservation Council and a Kona Historical Society board member.
The meeting will be held at Kona Historical Society, 81-6551 Mamalahoa Hwy. in Kealakekua. Pupus will be provided along with a no-host bar. Nonmembers are welcome. Cost of a basic yearlong membership is $35.

Newbery Quiz Bowl held Thursday
The 25th annual Big Island Newbery Quiz Bowl will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Kamehameha School’s Keaau Campus.
This year’s bowl will be the largest ever with 19 teams representing public and private schools and home-schooled students. Observers are welcome. The Newbery Quiz Bowl motivates students to read examples of excellent and challenging literature for their grade levels.
The program has also announced the stepping down of its founder and co-coordinator, Julia Tao. An east side coordinator is being sought. Paula Kamiya will continue as lead coordinator.

Japanese Culture Night is Friday
Attendees to Japanese Culture Night will learn about Japanese cuisine, calligraphy and how to make origami at 7 p.m. Friday at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St.
The free event will also feature the Japanese missionaries of Kona Family Church.
