Agricultural groups fear state layoffs will backlog shipments

Agricultural industry executives worry that Hawaii businesses will wither on the vine and incoming food will rot on the docks if the state goes through with massive layoffs of agriculture inspectors.

Plans call for laying off 50 of the state’s 78 agriculture inspectors, 64 percent of that specialized work force.

Diminished inspection capacity could also cost hundreds of millions of dollars each year if additional invasive species get established, industry officials say.

State inspectors both certify products to be exported out of Hawaii and inspect food and plants being imported into the state.

IAL meeting creates more questions than answers

KAPA‘A — What began as an informational meeting about the designation of important agricultural lands turned into a heated discussion about Kaua‘i’s agricultural future.

Dr. Karl Kim, a professor at the UH Department of Urban and Regional Planning, presented a slide show of the Koloa-Po‘ipu pilot agricultural lands study he and his colleagues conducted for the Land Use Commission. He was the guest speaker at the monthly Wailua-Kapa’a Neighborhood Association meeting Monday night at the Kapa’a Library.

Reminder…Herbicide Field Day on Wedelia & Sedges

This Friday, April 4, 2008

To: Landscape & Golf Course Industries

Wedelia is often used as a groundcover. However, some people consider it a weed and efforts are currently being taken to place it on the invasive weed list. Recently an herbicide trial was conducted with Sedge-Hammer (SledgeHammer | Sledge-Hammer), Manage, Certainty, Monument, and Image for the control of wedelia, purple nutsedge, green kyllinga, and white kyllinga. You are invited to attend a field day to observe the herbicide effects on wedelia and the early results on these sedges.

Date: April 4, 2008 (Friday)
Place: Meet at Maui Community College Greenhouse, Kahului
Time: 11:00 to 12:00 pm
Registration Deadline April 3.

Analysis of Kava Side Effects Reports Concerning the Liver–Causal relationship probable at monograph-conforming dosage

Analysis of hepatotoxic reactions listed by the BfArM (German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices)

From the original 32 suspected cases, there are only 4 cases with probable causality to kava that remain after substraction of the double entries, the cases unrelated to kava as well as the improbable or doubtful ones. Of these 4 cases, only one is related to a monograph-conforming dosage regimen (Strahl et al. 1998). The remaining 3 cases should be therefore classified as usages associated with overdosages. In the only kava side effect case associated with recommended use and a somewhat causal certainty, there seems to be an existing relationship to an immunoligical condition in combination with a congentical cytochrom P450-2D6 deficency. A comparable cause could also possibly be related to one case associated with overdosage (IKS-Nr. 2000-0014; see below).
